New Year, New Goals

A belated Happy New Year to you all!

It’s been a few months (maybe more) since I last posted on here. I want to be better about that, for myself more than anything. But I took some well needed time off from this blog to focus on a new WIP which I’m really excited about! I’ll give a little more information on that later through this post.

But that’s not why I wanted to write this. It is an update of sorts, and I do have some plans for this blog for this new year. I’ve struggled a little with thinking of what to write on here. Primarily, I have focused on writing craft and sharing snippets of my work. This year, I have some other goals – not only for this blog but for myself in general.

My goals for this year are:

1. Finish my current WIP. I’m not going to go into too much detail about what this WIP is about, but I will give you some idea. It’s completely different from Defiant. Think something a little more High Fantasy – Elves, Orcs, Magic, Demons etc. I’m currently about half way through it, and I plan to finish it, revise it, edit it etc. throughout this year so I can get to a place where I want to start querying. Which leads quite nicely into my next goal.

2. Start querying. This is something that I’ve never done before, so there’s gonna be a lot to learn in this coming year about this process. I’m both excited and terrified to start this part of the whole writing/publishing process, and I know I’m gonna have to put in a lot of work to get to this point.

3. Read more. Last year, like many years before it, I didn’t read a lot. But I did read a lot more than I usually would, so it felt like a step in the right direction towards reading at the scale I used to. I’ve said this before, but studying history at university really killed my love of reading – after a full day of reading books, journal articles, primary sources etc., the last thing I wanted to do was read. But, with all the incredible debut books that have come out recently, and will be coming out in 2019, I don’t think I’m going to be short of reading material.

And that last goal is what ties in with my plans for this blog. I do want to continue with writing about writing craft and the writing process and issues in the writing community etc., but I would like to focus on writing about reading as well. So, in order to keep myself accountable in my goal to read more, I am going to make it my aim to review what I’m reading every month on here. So, look out for more posts from me on here!

I know some of you will likely ask about Defiant, so I want to address that. What does this all mean for Defiant? Well, currently I have shelved Defiant. That doesn’t mean I’m never going to come back to it, or that I don’t intend to do anything further with it. Defiant is my first book, my book baby, and I want to do right by it. And, pushing it forward at the moment is not the right move for me. Do I want to one day publish it? Sure I do. But, will that be happening in the near future? No. One day, maybe, but not now. I have so many other books in me, and I want to give them a shot. The more I write, the better a writer I will become. And, I want to do justice to the story Defiant tells, to do right by Leora and the other characters. It’s already in much better shape after the revisions I’ve done so far, but I did just need to focus on a different project. After approximately two years focusing almost solely on Defiant, I felt to continue would harm it more than help it. Sometimes it pays to know when to put it down. And I’m so excited about this new WIP, and other projects I have planned for the future, that I don’t see myself coming back to Defiant any time soon. But, one day.

Do you have any goals or resolutions for this year? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Writing!
