Defiant Rewrite Snippet

Since Instagram didn’t want to get the formatting right, I thought I would post the snippet here. And, lucky for you guys, I decided to post a longer snippet too!

I flashed a grin at the captain. “Was the tower too good for me?”

“Less chance of escape if there is no window.”

I examined the bars. “I don’t know. These bars look fairly far apart.” They bore the same markings as my chains. I frowned.

“I’d like to see you try.” He leant back against the wall opposite my cell and crossed his arms, a smirk tugging at his lips.

I pointed at the markings. “Are these runes too?”

He nodded once.

“What do they do?”

“Try to escape and we’ll find out.”

“Aye, aye, Captain.” I raised my hand to salute him. A searing pain shot through my wrists. I gasped and stared at the burn marks which appeared beneath the manacles.

“Or, you could do that and find out. I did warn you not to move too much in those.”

I gawked at the burn marks. “Ow.”

“Don’t worry. When they take your hands later today, I’ll make sure they cut above the burn.” He chuckled.

I narrowed my eyes. “How thoughtful.”

I hope you guys enjoyed this snippet! It’s short, I know, but at least it’s more than I was originally going to share.

I’ve really been enjoying getting back into Leora’s story with this rewrite. It’s fairly different to the first draft, and I love the changes so far. The basic story is the same but it is following a different path – if that makes sense.

How is writing going for you guys? What stage are you at? Let me know in the comments!

Happy writing!
